Background Information Vesicular Glutamate Transporter 2 (VGLUT2) is a sodium dependent inorganic phosphate cotransporter that is involved in the calcium dependent glutamate release from astrocytes. It is expressed in only a subset of neurons, localized to synaptic vesicles, at synapses exhibiting classical excitatory features. VGLUT2 mRNA is found in brain regions that lack VGLUT1, a related protein also displaying sodium dependent inorganic phosphate cotransporter activity.

UniProt Summary FUNCTION: Mediates the uptake of glutamate into synaptic vesicles at presynaptic nerve terminals of excitatory neural cells. May also play a role in the endocrine glutamatergic system of other tissues such as pineal gland and pancreas. May also mediate the transport of inorganic phosphate.
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasmic vesicle, secretory vesicle, synaptic vesicle membrane. Membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein (Potential). Cell junction, synapse, synaptosome.
TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Expressed in brain (at protein level). Expressed in brainstem, deep nuclei, septal nuclei, nuclei of the diagonal band, frontal cortex, hypothalamus, midbrain, parietal cortex and temporal cortex. Also expressed in pineal gland and islets of Langerhans.
SIMILARITY: Belongs to the major facilitator superfamily. Sodium/anion cotransporter family. VGLUT subfamily.
