Application The Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) is a polypeptide growth factor, which stimulates the proliferation of a wide range of epidermal & epithelial cells.
Application Notes For most in vitro applications, EGF exerts its biological activity in the concentration range of 0.5 to 25.0 ng/mL. Responding cells are (partial list): Epidermal mesothelial cells.

Specific Activity Mouse EGF is fully biologically active when compared to standards. The ED50, as determined by its dose-dependent mitogenic activity on BALB/c 3T3 cells, is ≤ 0.15 ng/mL, corresponding to a specific activity of ≥ 6.6 x 10<sup>6</sup> units/mg.
Entrez Gene Summary Epidermal growth factor has a profound effect on the differentiation of specific cells in vivo and is a potent mitogenic factor for a variety of cultured cells of both ectodermal and mesodermal origin. The EGF precursor is believed to exist as a membrane-bound molecule which is proteolytically cleaved to generate the 53-amino acid peptide hormone that stimulates cells to divide.

Storage Conditions The lyophilized EGF, though stable at room temperature, is best stored desiccated at -20°C. Reconstitute with water to a concentration of 0.1 - 1 mg/mL. This solution can be diluted into other buffered solutions and stored at 4°C for 1 week or -20°C for future use. Reconstituted EGF should be maintained at -20°C in undiluted aliquots for up to one year.
