Background Information	Selectins (CD62s) are single-chain transmembrane glycoproteins that function as cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) by interacting with a range of oligosaccharide structures including sialyl-Lewis X (sLeX) via their C-type lectin domain. All three known selectins (L-, E-, and P-selectin or CD62L CD62E, CD62P, respectively) share a similar overall domain structure that includes an N-terminal C-type lectin domain (calcium-dependent lectin domain), an EGF-like domain, a variable number of short consensus repeat (SCR) or Sushi domains (2, 6, and 9 for CD62L CD62E, CD62P, respectively), a transmembrane domain, and a cytoplasmic tail. The extracellular domains show a high homology among the three selectins, the transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains however are not conserved among the three. E-selectin (CD62E, ELAM-1) and P-selectin (CD62P, GMP-140, LECAM3, PADGEM) are mainly expressed on endothelial cells at inflammatory sites, whereas L-selectin (CD62L) is exclusively expressed on leukocytes.

Background Information
