Background Information Dendritic cell-specific ICAM-3-grabbing non-integrin (DC-SIGN) is a C-type lectin and has a high affinity for ICAM3 molecules that plays roles in both cell-cell and host-pathogen interactions. DC-SIGN is a type II membrane protein. It is expressed on dendritic cells and mediates the interaction between dendritic cells and resting T cells. Viruses target DC-SIGN to promote infection and spread to other cells.

UniProt Summary FUNCITON: Probable pathogen-recognition receptor. May mediate the endocytosis of pathogens which are subsequently degraded in lysosomal compartments. May recognize in a calcium-dependent manner high mannose N-linked oligosaccharides in a variety of pathogen antigens.

SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Membrane; Single-pass type II membrane protein Potentia

TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Predominantly expressed in dendritic cells. Detected at very low levels in lung, spleen, lymph nodes and bone marrow.

INDUCTION: Down-regulated upon activation of dendritic cells.

SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Contains 1 C-type lectin domain.

CAUTION: In mouse, 5 genes homologous to human CD209/DC-SIGN and CD209L/DC-SIGNR have been identified. Mouse CD209A product was named DC-SIGN by Ref.1 because of its similar expression pattern and chromosomal location in juxtaposition to CD23, but despite of the low sequence similarity.
