Background Information Siglec-8 is a sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin that is mostly expressed in eosinophils. Siglec-8 is thought to contain three immunoglobulin-like domains, a transmembrane region, and a 47 amino acid cytoplasmic tail. Siglec-8 is expressed on COS cells and is able to intercede sialic acid-dependent binding to erythrocytes and sialoglycoconjugates. Combining Siglec-8 with certain antibodies is thought to promote human eosinophil apoptosis.

UniProt Summary FUNCTION: Putative adhesion molecule that mediates sialic-acid dependent binding to cells. Preferentially binds to alpha-2,3-linked sialic acid. Also binds to alpha-2,6-linked sialic acid. The sialic acid recognition site may be masked by cis interactions with sialic acids on the same cell surface.
